There are four distinct parenting styles (Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, Neglecting/Uninvolved); each of these styles are based on two dimensions which include parental warmth(responsiveness) and control (demandingness).

Authoritative parents provide both high warmth and control. These parents are encouraging and have age appropriate expectations.

Authoritarian parents provide low warmth and high control. These parents are rigid and demanding. They offer little to no direction and expect the child to figure things out themselves.

Permissive parents provide moderate warmth and low control. They are anything goes type parents seeking to be more of a friend than parent.

Neglecting parents are both low warmth and low control. They ignore their children and have little expectations.

Overall the best strategy for raising children is based on an Authoritative parenting style.
