Do you ever get tired of saying the same thing “over and over?” Are you feeling disrespected, because your child refuses to listen or follow directions? Is your child’s behavior stressing you out? Have you ever thought to yourself, “there’s nothing else I can do?” At some point on this parenting journey we have all experienced these feelings.
Even so, it is important that parents learn to let go of “parent guilt.” Parenting is an art; not a science. Parenting requires flexibility and a sense of humor. Following are some of my favorite parenting tips:
- Establish realistic and age-appropriate rules for acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
- Speak calmly and clearly when explaining rules and expectations.
- Be consistent.
- Teach your child how to put words to his or her feelings.
- Ignore inappropriate behavior that can be ignored, and encourage behavior you want to see.
